Athletes and officials at next year's Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris are set to travel in hydrogen powered vehicles as part of a sponsorship deal signed with energy giant Air Liquide.

The company is to supply hydrogen of renewable origin for several hundred Toyota Mirai vehicles which form part of the official Paris 2024 fleet.

"To ensure that we achieve our goal of making these Games more sustainable in response to climate change, we've rethought all the major features of the Games,” Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet said.

"By supplying hydrogen of renewable origin for the vehicles for athletes and officials, Air Liquide will help us reduce the carbon footprint of the Games,."

The French company, founded in 1902 and based in Paris, is the second largest supplier of industrial gases by revenues and has operations in over 80 countries.

The hydrogen supplied by Air Liquide is to be produced from water electrolysis or biomethane with guarantees of origin.

"Air Liquide and Paris 2024 share the same ambition, implementing concrete solutions to meet the challenge of climate change," Air Liquide Group chief executive François Jackow said.

"Beyond the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024, this partnership will accelerate the wide-scale adoption of hydrogen to decarbonize heavy and intensive transport, including taxis," Jackow added. "The challenge is huge, and it is only by working together that we will succeed."

Air Liquide claim that powering the cars in this way will need minimal charging time and give the vehicles a "great range." for the Olympics due to take place between July 26 and August 11 next year, followed by the Paralympics from August 28 until September 11.

Toyota has been the "World Wide Mobility Partner" for the Olympic and Paralympic Movements since 2015.

Paris 204 has promised that they will put on an event "unlike any other Games in history as they will be both spectacular and sustainable.

"We encourage energy conservation, innovation and creativity to develop new ways of working and bring about a new era in the organisation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games."

In its mission statement it added, "Our goal is to halve the emissions arising in relation to the Games, while offsetting even more CO2 emissions than we will generate.

"As the Games give us an opportunity to think bigger and see further, we want to help pick up the pace of the environmental transition in sport, regions and major events."
