Over 180 athletes are set to compete at the 2022 International Surfing Association (ISA) World Para Surfing Championships from 28 national teams, meaning new participation records are likely to be set in California.

Competition is set to take place at Pismo Beach over the next seven days, being held at the same location as the 2021 event.

The expected number of surfers will nearly double the figures from the inaugural event back in 2015.

Women's participation is set to grow 20 per cent this year on 2021 too, with 60 athletes entered.

The ISA seems to have strategically selected California again, as the organisation looks to make surfing part of the Paralympic programme for Los Angeles 2028, with an application currently being reviewed by the International Paralympic Committee.

"The time is right to go Para surfing," said ISA President Fernando Aguerre.

"We have time, we're organised and we've really shown the world what surfing can do at the Olympics and particularly how we've pushed millennials into the Olympic Games and Olympic Movement."

There are nine classifications for men and nine for women at the Championships, with three for standing surfers, two for prone, two for visually-impaired and one each for kneel and sit surfers.

Among the list of entered athletes, there are 12 men's and 10 women's world gold medallists including Brazilians Alcino Neto and Felipe Kizu Lima and Australians Matt Formston and Mark Stewart.

Canadian Victoria Feige and Melissa Reid of England are looking to become the first women to win four gold medals.
