The Kenyan has made the shortlist after beating his own marathon world record with a time of 2 hours 1min 9secs while winning the Berlin race this year.

Kipchoge, the reigning Olympic champion, also won the Tokyo Marathon this year.

He is joined by fellow African Soufiane El Bakkali in the quintet.

The Moroccan was unbeaten in 2022 in the 3,000 metres steeplechase, including a world-leading performance of 7:58.28 at the Diamond League event in Rabat.

His showing in the capital helped him to clinch the overall Diamond League title, while El Bakkali also became a world champion for the first time at Eugene 2022 after finishing second and third at London 2017 and Doha 2019, respectively.

Another victor in the Oregonian city, Noah Lyles of the United States, is included.

The 25-year-old set a personal best of 19.31sec to snatch the 200m title and add to his two gold medals from Doha 2019.

It also marked a world-leading time and national record, which saw Lyles move to third on the all-time list.

However, he was not able to help his country retain the 4x100m relay gold.

Away from the World Championships, Lyles became Diamond League overall winner in the 200m for the fourth time to add to his 2017, 2018, and 2019 triumphs.

Mondo Duplantis of Sweden and Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen make up the rest of the finalists. 

Duplantis became a world pole vault champion in both indoor and outdoor competition for the first time this year, while also improving his world records to 6.20 and 6.21 metres, respectively.

The Tokyo 2020 gold medallist also claimed Diamond League and European Championship victories.

Ingebrigtsen took the final spot on the shortlist as he scored gold medals in the World and European Championships 5,000 metres events as well as becoming 1500m champion in the latter.

The winner is set to be announced on December 5.
