New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson was the main speaker on the opening day of the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) World Conference on Women and Sport.

The conference is being attended by 1200 people at Tāmaki Makaurau in Auckland, with a further 500 joining virtually.

Robertson spoke about how New Zealand can continue to support the growth of women’s sport.

During his speech Robertson talked of "leveraging key moments", citing the Black Ferns Rugby World Cup victory against England at Eden Park in the city on Saturday (November 12).

The President of the Jordan Olympic Committee Prince Faisal Bin Al Hussein was also among the speakers on the opening day.

Following a traditional Maori welcome yesterday from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, a blessing and prayer of the conference room was led by Matua Matt Maihi.

Director of Collab Nikki Penetito-Hemara and Sport Northland’s Maori partnership manager Trina Henare hosted the first of a series of pop-up play activities, which got attendees moving.

They also spoke about their experiences and passion for driving positive social change within communities.

IWG co-chair Raewyn Lovett reflected on the first day’s proceedings, saying it was fantastic to see so many guests from overseas.

"We look back at the uncertainty we faced and now to see so many people on the ground is something quite special," says Lovett.

"They are already engaging in very important conversations and are keen to learn and listen."

The conference is scheduled to run until Friday (November 18).
