Home athlete Madeline Schizas leads the women's contest at Skate Canada following the short programme, while 17-year-old Kao Miura tops the men's standings ahead of world champion Shoma Uno.

Miura, seven years Uno's junior, began his routine with an expert quad Salchow-triple toe loop and landed another quad jump to amass a total score of 94.06.

That is just 0.9 points below his personal best, set last week at the opening leg of the Grand Prix of Figure Skating season in Massachusetts.

Back north of the border, in Ontario, world champion and three-time Olympic medallist Uno scored 89.98 for second place, but was some way off his best.

Italy's Matteo Rizzo - a European bronze medallist in 2019 - is third on 81.18.

Schizas scored 67.90, narrowly better than compatriot Gabrielle Daleman's 66.65.

Schizas, 19, was within two points of her personal best and landed two triple jumps.

"There's always things that I'd like to improve, but I'm happy with how it went," Schizas said.

"I'm happy with how I managed myself and my nerves."

Sixteen-year-old American Ava Marie Ziegler is third after scoring 66.49.

Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, the world bronze medallists in 2021, lead the ice dance competition after a rhythm dance worth 87.23 points.

Japanese duo Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara - world silver medallists earlier this year and team bronze medallists at the Beijing 2022 Olympics - lead the pairs contest and earned 73.39 for their short programme.

Skate Canada continues tomorrow at Paramount Fine Foods Centre.
