The Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) has outlined plans to stage its first Pan American Championships in 2023.

The declaration comes after GAMMA assisted in the staging of the AWKA Championship 6 event in Ecuador last week.

Twelve amateur athletes from Ecuador and four from Colombia took part in the event, with Ecuador-versus-Colombia fights given top billing.

Bryan Figeroa and Luis Rojas won under-57 kilogram and under-66kg fights for Colombia, respectively.

Henry Chango was also victorious at under-57kg and Nicolas Barrios an under-61kg winner as the countries split the series 2-2.

The AWKA Championship 6 offered a platform for promising athletes to learn and gain exposure, GAMMA said, and it is aiming to grow its presence in Latin America.

GAMMA has staged Asian Championships and European Championships, but the proposed Pan American Championships in 2023 would be the organisation's first.

At the most recent GAMMA World MMA Championships, the United States was the only country from the Americas to win a medal.

US fighters won three gold medals, one silver and four bronze.
