Breaking has been added to the programme for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago.

The sport, which is due to make its full Olympic debut at Paris 2024, has not been contested at the Pan American Games before, but was on the programme when Argentina's capital Buenos Aires staged the Youth Olympics in 2018.

Known as b-boys and b-girls, breaking competitors dance under pseudonyms and one competitor from the Americas, Argentina's "Broly", won a silver medal in the mixed team, mixed National Olympic Committee event at Buenos Aires 2018.

The breaking competition at Santiago 2023 will act as a qualifier for Paris 2024, according to Panam Sports.

"For us as the Organising Committee it is a great joy to announce that breaking will be part of these Games, it is a pride to have a sport that will be present at no less than the Paris 2024 Olympic Games," Santiago 2023 executive director Gianna Cunazza said.

Breaking will either take place at the Chimkowe Gymnasium in Peñalolén or the Urban Sports Esplanade at the National Stadium.

Santiago 2023 is to discuss the technical requirements of the competition with the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) before finalising the venue.

Breaking is one of various dancing disciplines governed by the WDSF.

The addition of breaking means there are now 39 sports on the 2023 Pan American Games programme.

The next edition of the Pan American Games is set to take place from October 20 to November 5.

Chile has never staged the event before.
