The Swiss resort has hosted the World Championships once before, in 1987.

Norwegian venue Narvik, Soldeu in Andorra and Germany's Garmisch-Partenkirchen had all been vying to stage Alpine skiing's marquee event in 2027.

Crans-Montana received 11 votes, Narvik and Soldeu three apiece and Garmisch-Partenkirchen just one on the opening day of a hybrid FIS Congress in Milan.

Promotional videos from all four candidates preceded the vote, with back-to-back Olympic Alpine combined champion Michelle Gisin fronting the Crans-Montana presentation.

The resort's frequent women's Alpine Ski World Cup races and previous staging of the World Championships - exactly 40 years before the promised 2027 edition - were both emphasied.

Sports Minister Viola Amherd and Swiss-Ski President Urs Lehmann both assured their backing, as did tennis legend Roger Federer.

"Hosting such an event in Switzerland is an incredible opportunity," Amherd said.

"Crans-Montana's history as winter sports resort is as old as Switzerland's snow sports transition.

"The destination has on many occasions proven its talent and expertise in hosting competitions of all sizes."

Switzerland last staged the event in 2017 in St Moritz.

The FIS Council also rubber-stamped the hosts for three other World Championships, although in each case they faced no opposition.

Falun in Sweden was the only nominee for the 2027 Nordic World Ski Championships.

It has been the venue five times before, most recently in 2015.

Austrian resort Montafon is due to stage the 2027 Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships, poised to be the largest winter sports event ever held in the state of Vorarlberg.

The Ski Flying World Championships are due to return to Oberstdorf for a seventh time in 2026.

The German town was last host in 2018.

With the FIS allowing for women to take part in ski flying competition for the first time in the upcoming season, advocates will hope that women may be able to take part at the 2026 World Championships.

"We had four excellent bids to host the 2027 Alpine World Championships and it certainly was not an easy decision," FIS President Johan Eliasch said.

"Crans-Montana brought a passion to its bid that you could feel. 

"Bringing the Alpine World Ski Championships to the heart of Alpine skiing in 2027 will be an unbelievable opportunity."

Eliasch added that "Oberstdorf will bring both a wealth of organizational experience to the table" in 2026.

"Falun already gave the world an unforgettable World Championship in 2015 and I am pleased that we can return there so quickly, just 12 years later, which will allow them to build on their experience and deliver another fantastic two weeks of Nordic action," the FIS President said of Falun.

Montafon's "very capable hands" are ones the FIS is "happy" to entrust with its marquee fresski, snowboard and freestyle tournaments, Eliasch said.

Eliasch is due to be re-elected unopposed tomorrow on the second day of the hybrid FIS Congress.

The billionaire businessman, who last year won a four-way vote to complete the term of Gian-Franco Kasper, is poised for a new four-year term which lasts until after the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
