Canada’s Shawn Burt earned a meeting with second seed Thibault Tricole after winning his World Darts Federation (WDF) World Championship opening match at the Lakeside Country Club.

Tricole is one of 16 seeded players in the men’s tournament, with the Frenchman receiving a bye through to the second round at Frimley Green in Surrey, England.

He would have been an interested spectator when his potential opponents Burt and Connor Scutt of England played their first-round match today.

Burt claimed a straight sets win over Scutt to secure the second round meeting with Tricole.

New Zealand’s Justin Thompson secured a 2-1 win over England’s Paul Hogan in his first match of the tournament.

Thompson will now face fifth seed Neil Duff of Northern Ireland.

Canada’s Rory Hansen and England’s Dave Prins were also winners today.

The duo recorded straight sets victories over Scotland’s Mark Barilli and Wales’ Mark Graham respectively.

Hansen is due to face England’s Nick Fullwell in the second round, while Prins is scheduled to play Michael Warburton of Wales.

Tori Kewish was among the winners in the women’s first round, with the Australian triumphing 2-0 against Scotland’s Lorraine Hyde.

Her reward is a scheduled meeting with top seed Deta Hedman of England.

The WDF World Championships is taking place for the first time at the Lakeside Country Club.

The venue previously hosted the British Darts Organisation (BDO) World Championship.

The BDO went into liquidation in 2020, with the WDF World Championships now serving as the successor.
