Ghana reached the final at the African qualifier at Laboma Beach, defeating Kenya, The Gambia, Nigeria and South Africa en route to a showdown with Mauritius.

The three-set final was edged by Ghana.

That gives the host nation a place at the Commonwealth Games, while one other African team - Kenya - had already qualified via their world ranking.

Ghana's men reached the semi-finals of the equivalent tournament at the same venue, but lost to The Gambia.

The Gambians went on to sweep South Africa in straight games in the final.

Despite the defeat, South Africa also earned a place at the Commonwealth Games as The Gambia's world ranking was already good enough to qualify.

Zambia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone and Nigeria were also represented at the Commonwealth Games qualification event. 

Beach volleyball made its Commonwealth Games debut at Gold Coast 2018, with Australia winning the men's title and Canada the women's.

The former Smithfield Market site in Birmingham city centre is due to stage Commonwealth Games beach volleyball competition later this year.
