Laura Peel of Australia and Xindi Wang of China won the final Aerials World Cup titles on offer before the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics at Deer Valley.

In the women’s aerials competition, Peel was a convincing winner after posting a score of 118.05 in the final.

Peel scored highly in the landing component with 8.4, as she triumphed by a score of more than 30 points.

In second place was China’s Fanyu Kong with a score of 84.58, who could have been closer to Peel but for a poor landing score of 2.1.

The podium was completed by Hanna Huskova of Belarus with a score of 82.65, which featured the highest scores of the final in the air, form and landing categories - of 5.6, 14.2 and 8.7 respectively.

Huskova’s degree of difficulty was only 2.9, compared to the 4.0 degrees of difficulty of her rivals also on the podium, meaning she had to settle for third place.

Despite not qualifying for the final after finishing 26th, Mengtao Xu of China still leads the overall World Cup standings in the discipline with 385.

Kong closed the gap to 24 points following her second place finish at Deer Valley and now sits on 361, with today’s winner Peel in third with 294.

Meanwhile, the men’s aerials competition saw China claim a clean sweep of the podium with victory going to Wang with a score of 122.62.

Wang triumphed by ten points, registering the highest scores in the air, form and landing categories of 5.8, 13.3 and 8.0 respectively in the final.

In second place was compatriot Longxiao Yang with a score of 112.67, while Jiaxu Sun completed the podium with a score of 83.50.

Sun could have got closer to his compatriots on the podium but after opting for a trick with a high degree of difficulty of 5.000, a low landing score of 1.1 saw him claim the final spot on the podium by 0.20 from Dmytro Kotovskyi of Ukraine.

In the overall World Cup standings, leader Maxim Burov of Russia skipped competition in Deer Valley but still leaders on 400 points.

His closest challenger is Sun on 266, with fellow Chinese skier Zongyang Jia in third on 251 points.

The seventh round of the men’s and women’s Aerials World Cup is scheduled to take place in Yaroslavl in Russia on February 26, while aerials competition at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is scheduled to take place between February 10 and 16.
