A special 50-pence piece has been created to mark the Games, scheduled to be held in the English city in just over 200 days’ time.

It was released alongside new coins to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th anniversary on the throne as part of the platinum jubilee collection.

The Birmingham 2022 coin has been designed by Natasha Preece of the Royal Mint.

It is her second winning design through the Royal Mint Advisory Committee competition after designing the 2020 Remembrance Day coin.

"The main challenge I faced while designing for this competition was how to make a design that reflected all of the sports involved in the event, all of the different people that competed and all the nations that took part," said Preece.

"I wanted to stay away from using a person as the main focus as I wanted my design to be inclusive to everyone, and that would be hard to represent using one person.

"When I was designing this coin I was thinking about which areas of the design are going to be polished and frosted, I feel the library pattern on the coin creates beautiful areas of frosting and polishing.

"I’m really happy with the final outcome of the coin."

England is set to stage the Commonwealth Games for the third time after London 1934 and Manchester 2002.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are due to take place from July 28 to August 8.
