The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has announced a partnership with Italian company Mondo S.p.a. to provide a Baseball5 field of play at the Aomi Fan Park during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Baseball5 is a smaller variant of baseball and softball, featuring five players on each team, five innings and requiring only a ball to play.

No pitchers are required as the hitting is done with the hand.

It is being showcased at the fan park’s Sport Initiation Zone in the Japanese capital during the Paralympics, which began yesterday and are running until September 5.

The WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari said he is excited at the opportunity the agreement will bring.

"Mondo is possibly the best partner for Baseball5," Fraccari said.

"They have a great tradition of producing the highest quality in sports flooring while also boasting an extensive Olympic experience.

"Mondo is also a very innovative company which fits the image of our new discipline.

"The WBSC is looking forward to establishing a longstanding partnership with Mondo and we are thrilled by the opportunity to showcase the urban five-on-five version of our sport together."

Mondo’s sport division general manager Maurizio Stroppiana added: "We like to develop specific solutions for new and upcoming sport disciplines and welcomed the opportunity to create a field using our Sportflex M product for the World Baseball Softball Confederation to present the innovative Baseball5 project.

"Joining the Paralympic family is an honour for Mondo, as we share the mission and vision to help shape a more inclusive society and make sport accessible to anybody who wishes to enjoy it."

Baseball and softball both featured at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for the first time since Beijing 2008, although at present this is only a one-off return.

Baseball5 is due to debut at the Youth Olympic Games in the Senegalese capital Dakar in 2026, which would make it the first mixed-gender team sport to feature.
