More than 110 athletes are set to make use of a pre-Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games training camp organised by Panam Sports in Tachikawa.

Athletes have today begun to arrive at the camp, the first the body has ever organised for an Olympics.

The continental umbrella organisation had hoped 300 competitors would take up its offer when it signed the deal with Tachihi Holdings in 2018.

Among the athletes who will train at the camp are London 2012 Olympic 400 metres gold medallist Kirani James and his Grenada team-mate Anderson Peters, the reigning world javelin champion.

They will be joined by the likes of Cuba's world discus champion Yaime Perez and Lenin Preciado of Ecuador, a three-time Pan American champion in judo.

Swimmers and judokas will arrive during the first week of the camp, while athletes in track and field are set to join the second half from July 19.

Athletes have been told by the International Olympic Committee to arrive at the Olympic Village no earlier than five days before their event and depart no later than two days after as part of the COVID-19 measures set to be in place at Tokyo 2020.

They are allowed to attend pre-Games training camps in Japan, where the restrictions and protocols will also be implemented.

"We are very happy and at the same time very grateful to the authorities of ADK, Tachihi Holdings and the entire city of Tachikawa," said Panam Sports President Neven Ilic.

"Being able to do this important camp is historic and a unique opportunity for our athletes from the Americas to arrive better prepared and ready to compete in the Olympic Games.

"World-class facilities, a comfortable hotel, all the health and safety measures have been adopted and there is a warmth from the people and the children of this city who want to see their sports idols, which really has us very surprised."

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are set to run from July 23 to August 8.
