The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) has said the World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships will take place as planned at Kuortane in June.

The IOF and event organisers determined the event can be held on June 10 and 18.

The governing body said final approval for the event needs to be given by the Finnish Border Guard, but this was not possible to obtain until the decision about the organisation of the event was final.

"The IOF is very pleased and hopeful that our elite mountain bike orienteers will be able to compete at the highest level and status at the championships in Finland in June," said Tom Hollowell, IOF secretary general and chief executive.

"The organisers in Kuortane have made great efforts in planning for a COVID-19 safe event and we will continue to work with them and the local authorities to fulfil the task."

The IOF say organisers have made preliminary planning for the safe conduct of the event considering the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

The event is planned to be held with a competition bubble in operation, with all teams staying at a common Athletes Village located at the Kuortane Olympic Training Centre.

Spectators will not be permitted to attend, while no parallel public competitions will be held.

The IOF said this will help to maintain the integrity of the bubble.

Further details are expected in the build-up to the event.

The IOF has confirmed that 16 national teams had entered by the deadline of March 28, including the top 10 ranked nations.

This met the participation requirements set previously by the IOF Council.

Including the Junior World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships, the event will welcome just over 200 participants to five days of competitions.
