Hosts Tunisia claimed the freestyle team title after winning three gold medals on the final day of the African Wrestling Championships in Hammamet.

Tunisia had seven medallists overall in finishing on 183 points at Salle Omnisports de Hammamet, edging out Egypt by three.

Their trio of champions were Ayoub Barraj, Sabri Mnasriya and Mohamed Saadaoui.

In the 79 kilograms final, Barraj thrashed Algeria’s Fateh Benferdjallah 10-0 to win his third consecutive title.

Tunisia’s second freestyle title of the day went to Mnasriya, who hung on to defeat Morocco’s Oussama Regani 2-1 in the 86kg final.

Their third and final triumph came at 92kg where Saadaoui overcame defending champion Hosam Merghany of Egypt 6-0.

The bronze medals went to Egypt’s Aboubakr Gadelmawla and Nigeria’s Ekerekeme Agiomor at 79kg, Nigeria’s Melvin Bibo and Guinea-Bissau’s Bedopassa Buassat Djonde at 86kg, and Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Aron Isomi Mbo and Algeria’s Mohammed Fardj at 92kg.

Egypt finished second overall thanks to their three champions – Amr Hussen, Khaled Elmoatamadawi and Khaled Abdalla.

At 70kg, returning silver medallist Hussen trailed Algeria’s Fares Lakel 1-0 after the opening period but managed eight second-period points before planting the 2018 African bronze medallist on his back for a fall.

The bronze medallist was Morocco’s Rabii Regani after he beat Tunisia’s Haithem Dakhlaoui by fall.

Elmoatamadawi and Abdalla, the 97kg and 125kg winners, respectively, went undefeated in their Nordic system tournaments, claiming Egypt’s second and third freestyle titles.

In the 65kg final, Guinea-Bissau’s Mbunde Cumba Mbali easily claimed gold with a 13-0 routing of Egypt’s Aly Abdelhamid.
