Sri Lanka beat the West Indies by three wickets to secure the plate title at the International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

A double century opening stand from batsmen Hasitha Boyagoda and Dhananjaya Lakshan set the platform for victory as they went in pursuit of the West Indies' total of 254-5 from their 50 overs at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Christchurch

But a Sri Lankan collapse gave the West Indies hope of an unlikely turnaround before they recovered to reach their target with two balls to spare.

"We kept them under 260 and after that we put on a big partnership so that we could win easily," Sri Lanka captain Kamindu Mendis said.

"Unfortunately, our middle-order batsmen fell very quickly because I think we relaxed a bit. It became a very tight situation but we managed it well in the end."

Alick Athanaze was the star performer for the West Indies as his unbeaten run-a-ball 110 helped his side record a competitive score after being put into bat.

Brad Barnes and Bharat Yadram posted tallies of 37 not out and 31 respectively for the defending champions.

Sri Lanka set about their run-chase in commanding fashion as Boyagoda and Lakshan did the damage by scoring 118 and 98 respectively.

Having passed 200 with the two openers in tact, it seemed Sri Lanka would coast to victory but they lost a cluster of quick wickets before eventually edging over the line.

Bangladesh beat England by five wickets at the John Davies Oval in Queenstown to set up a meeting with South Africa to decide who finishes fifth.
