Oman edged into the final of the Gulf Cup of Nations courtesy of a narrow victory over Bahrain at the Jaber International Stadium in Kuwait.

The 2009 winners were the dominant team in the early stages of the match, as they looked to reach the final for the fourth time.

Despite putting pressure on their opponents, Oman were left frustrated in their efforts to make a breakthrough.

A mistake from Mahdi Abdul Jabber ultimately proved Bahrain’s undoing, with the midfielder heading into his own net from an Oman corner.

Having taken the lead, Oman were able to defend their slim advantage in the second half of the tie to secure a third clean sheet in four games.

They will now face the United Arab Emirates, who beat Iraq in the second semi-final.

The two teams were unable to be separated during normal time, with the game remaining goalless in the extra time period.

It left the match to be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

The UAE held their nerve to score all four penalties they took, with Iraq missing two of their attempts.

The result keeps the UAE on course for a third success at the tournament, which they last won back in 2013.

Their previous triumph came in 2007.
