The vice president of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and the President of the South American Weightlifting Confederation, Jose Quiñones, visited the IWF headquarters in Budapest to discuss plans for two tournaments.

He spoke to IWF President Tamás Aján in the Hungarian capital, with the South American Junior and Youth Championships in Peru's capital Lima high on the agenda.

The tournament will double up as the under-15, under-17 and under-20 South American Championships.

Both events will be held from December 12 to 18, while the Peruvian Weightlifting Federation will hold seminars on doping, technical officials, coaching and administration.

The idea behind holding the Championships together is to help the National Federations reduce costs.

An "International Cup" will also be held with more details announced next month.

Quiñones, a former President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee, was banned last December by Peru's national sports court from holding any position in the country's governing bodies.

He said that many South American countries have made "huge progress" in the sport of weightlifting in recent years.

He welcomed the fact that the second South American Youth Games and the Bolivarian Games will include weightlifting in their programmes.
