Hosts China made a perfect start to the men’s competition at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 Under-18 World Cup in Chengdu today with two victories.

The home nation begun their Pool C campaign with a 21-6 win over Turkey at a court set up outside the Global Center in the Chinese city.

They followed this up by beating South Korea 17-10 in the final game of the day.

Zietang Yang led China’s scoring today with 11 points overall .

Hungary also won both of their games today, overcoming Slovenia 15-12 and Turkey 20-18.

The one other game in Pool C saw Slovenia defeat South Korea 22-6.

In Pool B, Ukraine are the early leaders having beaten 2015 winners New Zealand 16-9 and defending champions Qatar 18-13.

They were helped considerably by Maksym Deyna, who was the top male scorer today with 16 points.  

Prior to their loss against Ukraine, Qatar had earlier beaten Bahrain 17-12.

Georgia suffered defeat in both their matches, losing 22-20 to New Zealand and 17-13 to Bahrain.

In the women’s competition, the United States and Australia secured two wins each in Pool A.

The US beat Hungary 13-9 and Japan 21-15, while Australia defeated Switzerland 14-13 and Hungary 15-12.

Japan preceded their defeat by overcoming Switzerland 14-12 in what was considered the game of the day.

Maaya Inoue was the match winner after Switzerland’s Belinda Mensah had hit a two-pointer in the final second of regulation time to send the game into overtime.

Spain top the Pool D standings after beating defending champions France 9-8 and Kazakhstan 19-7.

France and Kazakhstan had both won their earlier matches with the former defeating Singapore 21-3 and the latter overcoming Egypt 15-6.

The one other game in Pool D saw Egypt beat Singapore 21-13.

The top two from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals on July 2, which will be followed by the semi-finals, third-place play-off and final on the same day.

Individual dunk, shoot-out and skills contests will also be held alongside the matches.

The 3x3 discipline was officially added to the programme for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games earlier this month.
