Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) has congratulated Steve Moneghetti after the former long distance runner was inducted into the Athletics Australia Hall of Fame.

Moneghetti is set to serve as the Australian team Chef de Mission at their home Commonwealth Games next year and will take part in Gold Coast 2018's one-year-to-go celebrations here tomorrow.

He has arrived in Gold Coast from Sydney, where his contribution to athletics in the country was recognised.

During his athletics career, Moneghetti won medals at four separate Commonwealth Games, including marathon gold at Victoria 1994.

It followed marathon bronze and silver at Edinburgh 1986 and Auckland 1990 respectively, while he also won bronze in the 10,000 metres at Kuala Lumpur 1998.

Craig Phillips, CGA's chief executive, hailed the achievements of Moneghetti after he received the Hall of Fame honour.

"Steve's contribution to athletics in Australia, and to Australian sport on the whole, has been incredibly significant," he said.

"He is among our Commonwealth Games greats, having medalled at consecutive Games from Edinburgh in 1986 through to Kuala Lumpur in 1998, including a famous marathon gold in Victoria, Canada in 1994.

"As an athlete he is someone who always represented his country with great distinction, and he continues to do so in his various roles that he holds in Australian sport.

"Gold Coast 2018 will be Steve's ninth Commonwealth Games as an athlete or official, and we are incredibly proud to have him as part of our team."

Moneghetti, a World Championship bronze medallist in the marathon at Athens 1997, will be the Australian Chef de Mission at a third successive Commonwealth Games.

He first took up the role for Delhi 2010 before resuming the post at Glasgow 2014.

At the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, Mongehetti was the Mayor of the Games Village.

Sydney 2000 pole vault silver medallist Tatiana Grigorieva and Tokyo 1964 Olympic women's 200m bronze medal winner Marilyn Black were also added to the Hall of Fame.
