Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC) President Prince Faisal bin Hussein has lavished praise on the country's Rio 2016 delegation after a Games which yielded the nation's first-ever gold medal.

Eight athletes from the Asian country travelled to Brazil in all, with taekwondo player Ahmad Abughaush topping the podium in the men's 68 kilogram division after defeating Alexey Denisenko of Russia in the final.

The tenth seed in the tournament won not only his country's first gold medal, but their first medal of any colour at an Olympics.

HRH Prince Feisal, the younger brother of King Abdullah II, was impressed by not only sporting performance but the way the country's athletes conducted themselves in Brazil.

"The Olympic Games represent a celebration of humanity and all of us in Jordan can celebrate the success of our delegation," he said.

"They performed magnificently in their events and in particular congratulations to Ahmad Abughaush for his gold medal.

"He is our hero, as is the whole team.

"They are all the pride of Jordan and consistently showed both the Olympic and Jordanian spirit throughout these Games."

Abughaush's gold sparked mass celebrations in the Asian nation with a public celebration planned for Al Hussein Park in capital Amman.

Prince Feisal, the founder of the Generations for Peace organisation, contacted every athlete after their competition to offer support and encouragement.

Jordan were also represented in Rio by men's Marathon runner Methkal Abu Drais, boxers Obada Al-Kasbeh and Obada Al-Kasbeh, judoka Ibrahim Khalaf, swimmers Khader Baqlah and Talita Baqlah and triathlete Lawrence Fanous.
