Russia won three gold medals on the final day of action at the European Junior Wrestling Championships in Bucharest, ensuring they topped the freestyle medal standings.

Having already secured a hat-trick of gold medals yesterday, Abasgadzhi Magomedov, David Baev and Magomedamin Dibirov triumphed today in the 55 kilograms, 66kg and 120kg categories respectively.

Cadet world silver medallist Magomedov beat Georgia’s Roberti Dingashvili courtesy of a first-period fall after building a 12-2 lead.

Baev, the 2014 cadet world champion, found himself 8-0 behind against defending champion Enes Uslu of Turkey after two minutes of his final before storming back with 14 unanswered points.

Dibirov, who defeated European cadet champion Alimagomed Alikhmaev of Azerbaijan in the quarter-finals, wrestled a cautious match with Turkey’s Huseyin Civelek and ultimately secured a 6-1 victory thanks to single-leg takedowns in both periods.

The three victories followed success for compatriots Georgii Okorokov, Uruzbek Tsomartov and Iurii Vlasko yesterday.

Okorokov beat home favourite Razvan Marian Kovacs by fall in the 50kg final, while Tsomartov defeated Turkey’s Selim Kozan 11-8 in the 60kg and Vlasko overcame Georgia’s Givi Matcharashvili 3-2 in the 96kg.

The Russians did not have it all their own way in the freestyle competition, however, suffering losses against Azerbaijani opposition in the two other gold medal matches.

Murad Suleymanov beat Zaurbek Sidakov 9-4 at 74kg and Gadzhimurad Magomedsaidov defeated Batyrbek Tchakulov 3-2 at 84kg.
