Iran’s Mojitaba Goleij made easy work of Belarus’ Dzianis Khamiankou in the 84 kilogram final to help his country pip Azerbaijan to the freestyle team title on the final night of action at the Junior Wrestling World Championships in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil.

Goleij racked up four takedowns and an exposure on his way to claiming a 12-2 technical fall victory in the second period, securing the second gold medal of the weekend for Iran’s freestyle team, which finished with an additional four silvers to win the team title with 62 points, followed by Azerbaijan with 58 and Russia with 49.

Khamiankou, this year’s junior European bronze medallist, had a difficult time getting on the offensive against Goleij, who controlled the mat and the pace from start to finish.

The 84kg bronze medals went to Russia’s Musalaliev Arsen Ali and Kazakhstan’s Iliskhan Chilayev at the expense of Japan’s Shota Shirai and Poland’s Krysztof Sadowik respectively.

Despite Iran’s team victory, it was runners-up Azerbaijan who enjoyed a golden night, winning three titles.

Mahir Amiraslanov started off the Azerbaijani run at 55kg with a first period technical fall win over India’s Ravi Kumar, 10-0.

The title was Amiraslanov’s first at a World Championships, having twice been a world silver medallist at cadet level in 2013 and 2014.

The youngster conceded just six points all day, a significant feat considering he faced stiff competition from Japanese, Russian and Iranian wrestlers in the opening rounds.

Russia’s Badrudinov Khasankhusein won one of the two 55kg bronze medal matches against Iran’s Mohammad Namjou Motlagh and was joined on the third step of the podium by the United States’ Stevan Micic, who beat Mongolia’s Zanabazar Zandanbud.

Teymur Mammadov continued Azerbaijan's gold medal-winning streak at 66kg, winning his second world title in as many years.

Last year’s cadet world champion and Youth Olympic Games gold medallist beat Japan’s Yuhi Fujinami 4-3 in a topsy-turvy match that saw lots of scrambling, but few offensive points, nabbing a shoelace takedown with 10 seconds remaining to secure top honours.

The bronze medals were won by Russia’s Sidakov Zaurbek, who defeated Georgia’s Avtabdil Kentchadze, and the US’s Aaron Pico, up against Turkey’s Enes Uslu.

Azerbaijan's gold medal hat-trick was complete when Said Gamidov overcame Iran’s Amin Taheri in the 120kg final, winning by technical fall, 14-3.

Gamidov scored back-to-back inside trips within the first minute of action and although his first only scored two points, his second sent Taheri onto his back and racked up an additional four.

The pair exchanged takedowns to make it 8-3 at the break, but within a minute of the restart Gamidov struck again with a four-point chest lock from his feet before taking gold on the final takedown.

Turkey’s Yunus Dede got his hands on a bronze medal by overcoming Russia’s Krivtsov Ravel, while the US’s Nathan Butler beat Poland’s Kamil Kosciulek to the other.

The next major event on the international wrestling calendar is due to be the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas from September 7 to 12.
