Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will fly to Buenos Aires to provide final impetus to Istanbul 2020 ahead of the September 7 voteSeptember 2 - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will lead Istanbul 2020's delegation for the Olympic and Paralympic host city vote here this week as he aims to bring the Games to Turkey for the first time, it was announced here today.

Erdoğan will provide the final touches to the bid ahead of the vote on saturday (September 7) and will fly here directly from attending a G20 Conference in Saint Petersburg.

He will be joined by Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan, who is responsible for economic and financial affairs, Youth and Sport Minister Suat Kılıç and Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş.

Alongside this announcement, a campaign theme focusing on "history in the making" has also been revealed, with more elements of this to emerge over the coming days as Istanbul prepares to face rivals Madrid and Tokyo.

"History in the making" has been described by Istanbul 2020 leader Hasan Arat as a natural choice of theme for the last days of the campaign as the bid offers the Olympic Movement a number of historic firsts.

These include the first Games in Turkey, the first Games staged across two continents simultaneously and the first Games in a nation where nearly half the population is under-25, he explained.

Suat Kılıç will also be in Buenos Aires to support Istanbul 2020Suat Kılıç will also be in Buenos Aires to support Istanbul 2020

The presence of senior Government figures, including the Prime Minister, is another thing that pleased Arat and he hopes it will be a further way to help Turkey realise its dream of securing the host rights for the Games.

"We are delighted that the Prime Minister and other senior Turkish Government officials will be here in Buenos Aires," he said.

"Istanbul 2020 has enjoyed full Government support from the very moment the Prime Minister personally launched our bid over two years ago.

"So it is fitting that he will be here with us as our campaign to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Turkey for the first time comes to its conclusion."
