Thailand's top seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk suffered a shock defeat in the quarter-finals of the Badminton World Federation Grand Prix Gold event in Bangkok today.

The world number 11 was beaten 21-18, 21-12 in 38 minutes by Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the Thailand Masters.

It means Kantaphon Wongcharoe is the only home player left flying the flag in the men's singles.

He beat Indian opponent Aditya Joshi 21-12, 21-11.

Two Indonesian players also made it through.

Tenth seed Anthong Si Ginting beat Zheo Junpeng of China 21-16, 21-16.

Third ranked Tommy Sugiarto is now the highest seed left in the draw after winning in three sets against another home player in Khosit Phetpradab.

He battled back from losing the second set to triumph 21-9, 22-24, 21-17 in a 74 minute epic.

Top seed Busanan Ongbumrungpan remains the player to beat in the women's singles draw.

The home player won 21-7, 21-18 over Malaysia's Soniia Cheah to march on into the last four.

She was joined by the second, third and fourth ranked players in a heavyweight semi-final line-up.

Team-mate Nitchaon Jindapol beat fifth ranked Liang Xiaoyu of China, 21-15, 19-21, 21-14.

Yufei Chen ensured retribution for the badminton powerhouse by triumphing 21-15, 21-11 over Natsumi Shimoda of Japan.

But Japan also enjoyed success as fourth seed Aya Ohori beat Chinese rival Aya Xiaoxin, 21-9, 21-12.

Semi-finals will take place across both draws tomorrow before the tournament is scheduled to finish on Sunday (February 12).
