Several seeds were knocked out of the Princess Sirivannavari Thailand Masters, a Badminton World Federation Grand Prix Gold event, today as the competition in Bangkok saw third round action.

In the men’s singles, number two seed Huang Yuxiang of China was sent home by Singapore’s Anthony Ginting in a clash which took three sets to complete, with the latter winning 19-21, 21-15, 21-12.

Ginting faces another Chinese challenger in the quarter-finals after Zhao Junpeng, the 13th seed, defeated seventh seed Hsu Jen Hao of Chinese Taipei 16-21, 21-12, 21-9.

Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoe also knocked out one of the top ranked players in the form of Firman Abd Kholik of Singapore with the 16th seed losing 25-23, 21-12.

Zii Jia Lee of Malaysia beat ninth seed Ihsan Maul Mustofa in straight sets, overcoming the Singapore player 21-19, 21-14.

His reward is a meeting with top seed Tanongsak Saensomboo after he got through to the quarter-finals with a 21-17, 21-14 over Singapore’s Androw Yunanto.

In the women’s singles competition, only one seed lost in the second round.

Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand was knocked out by Japan’s Natsumi Shimoda in an epic battle which finished 21-17, 19-21, 24-22.

Top seed Busanan Ongbamrung of Thailand progressed with a 13-21, 21-16, 21-18 win over China’s Gao Fangjie.

The tournament is scheduled to finish on Sunday (February 12).
