World number five Son Wan-ho of South Korea will be aiming to make his top seeding count as he leads the field at this week’s Badminton World Federation (BWF) 2016 Korea Masters Grand Prix Gold event in Seogwipo.

The tournament, which is due to start tomorrow and finish on Sunday (December 11), is set to take place at the Seogwipo Olympic Stadium.

Athletes will be competing for prize money totalling $120,000 (£94,000/€111,000).

Son has received a bye in the first round and will await the winner of the contest between Japan’s Yusuke Onodera and fellow South Korean player Park Tae-Hoon in round two.

Defending men’s singles champion Lee Dong-keun, also of South Korea, is seeded third.

The 26-year-old defeated compatriot Lee Hyun-il in the final of this event last year and he will be hoping to continue his successful recent form at this competition following his Grand Prix gold win here in 2012 also.

Dutch Open winner Wang Tzu-wei of Chinese Taipei is also in action in Seogwipo this week.

The 21-year-old, who won gold at the BWF World University Championships in Ramenskoe in Russia earlier this year, is seeded fourth and is scheduled to take on South Korea's Park Wan-ho of South Korea in what could prove to be a tricky opening round match in front of a hostile South Korean crowd.

Another home favourite, Sung Ji-hyun, leads the way in the women’s singles competition seedings.

Sung, the 2015 BWF World Championships women’s singles bronze medallist, gets her campaign underway against Yukino Nakai of Japan.

Perhaps providing the toughest competition for Sung will be another South Korean player in Bae Yeon-ju.

The 26-year-old has collected a number of high profile wins in recent years, notably against Rio 2016 women’s singles champions Carolina Marin and Thai duo Porntip Buranaprasertsuk and Ratchanok Intanon, who is ranked second in the world at present.

Bae opens her account in round one against Japan’s unseeded Natsuki Nidaira.

A host of qualifying round matches are scheduled to take place tomorrow to establish the full first round draw of the competition.
