Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen came from behind to beat China’s Guo Kai at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Macau Open on a day when all competing top seeds triumphed.

Chou claimed a 21-23, 21-17, 21-14 win over his opponent at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion to set up a third-round clash with China’s Zhu Siyuan, a walkover victor at the expense of Malaysia’s Ming Hui Lew.

The top seed in the women’s singles, India’s Saina Nehwal, also had to overcome a deficit in beating Indonesia’s Hanna Ramadini 21-23, 21-14, 21-18.

Next up for her is a second-round encounter with another Indonesian, Dinar Dyah Ayustine, who defeated Hong Kong’s TsangWing Chiu Avery 21-19, 21-11.

The biggest casualties in the men’s and women’s singles were the fourth seeds as Hong Kong’s Hu Yun and Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ya Ching crashed out of their respective events.

Hu lost 21-17, 21-7 to Indonesia’s Firman Abd Kholik, while Hsu fell to a 25-23, 17-21, 21-11 loss at the hands of Malaysia’s Jin Wei Goh.

Chinese Taipei’s Chen Hung Ling and Chi-Lin Wang began their quest to justify their top seeding in the men’s doubles with a 21-7, 21-6 win over home favourites Pang Fong Pui and Lam Hou Him.

Their mixed doubles counterparts, Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh of Malaysia, registered a 21-17, 21-19 win over Indonesia’s Fernando Kurniawan and Devi Tika Permatasari.

The top seeds in women’s doubles, China’s Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan, will begin their quest for glory tomorrow having been given a bye through to round two.

Awaiting them are Chinese Taipei’s Kuo Yu Wen and Szu Yu Chen, 21-13, 17-21, 21-13 winners against Hong Kong’s Yuen Sin Ying and Ng Wing Yung.

The BWF Macau Open is a Grand Prix Gold level tournament.
