Top women's seed Saina Nehwal again needed three games to progress at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Macau Open.

The Indian, an Olympic bronze medallist at London 2012, went the distance in her first round clash against Hanna Ramadini of Indonesia yesterday.

Ramadini's compatriot Dinar Dyah Ayustine proved to be a similarly awkward opponent in round two today, with Nehwal again having to come from behind as she won 17-21, 21-18, 21-12.

Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi, the third seed, also booked her place in the quarter-finals at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion as she beat Chiang Mei-hui of Chinese Taipei 21-11, 21-12.

Malaysia's fifth seed Tee Jing Yi was knocked out, however, with the Commonwealth Games mixed team champion at Glasgow 2014 losing to China's Chen Xiaoxin 21-17, 21-19.

In the men's competition, third round matches were played with Chinese Taipei's top seed Chou Tien-chen marching through to the last eight with success over Zhu Siyuan of China, 21-16, 21-17.

Hong Kong's fifth seed Wong Wing Ki was the next best ranked player in the competition but departed today, losing to Sai Praneeth Bhamidipati of India, 21-15, 21-17.

That means Chou's main rival could be his sixth-seeded compatriot Wang Tzu-wei, who came through today against Tan Chun Seang of Malaysia, 21-19, 21-10.

The quarter-finals will be played in Macau tomorrow.
