Olympic silver medallist Mikaël Kingsbury’s reign of dominance came to an end as Australian Matt Graham secured his maiden International Ski Federation (FIS) Freestyle Skiing World Cup moguls victory at Deer Valley in the United States.

Canadian Kingsbury, the current dual moguls world champion, had won the previous three events and looked favourite to clinch another success before a slight mistake on the final run opened the door for Graham, who took advantage with a superb display to ensure he topped the podium.

The Australian finished with a total score of 83.48 points, with Kingsbury having to settle for silver on 82.75.

Sweden’s Ludvig Fjallstrom took home bronze as he amassed 81.41, edging Jimi Salonen of Finland by a slender 0.03 margin.

The Canadian remains in pole position on the overall leaderboard on 380 points, with Graham his nearest challenger on 257.

“Mikael seems to have always kind of got me,” Graham said.

“He always beats me - He’s the top guy and he’s dominated the sport for four or five years, so to look up and see his final score below mine, yeah, that was a nice feeling.

“I’ve been waiting and hoping to get on that top podium step for a while, so it’s really satisfying.

“I’ve been kind of creeping my way up and getting closer to [Kingsbury], really working hard in my training on and off snow, and I feel like it’s paying off.

“I’m closing the gap, but there’s still a long way to go.”

In the women’s event, Canadian Justine Dufour-Lapointe wrestled back the overall lead from sister Chloé as she claimed victory with a score of 77.80 points.

Yulia Galysheva of the Ukraine was second after she recorded 77.75, with Chloé Dufour-Lapointe third on 77.11.

The result saw Justine avenge last weekend’s defeat to Chloe and saw her leapfrog her sister into top spot on the World Cup standings as she has a slender four-point lead on 304.

Galysheva’s silver medal also pushed her up the leaderboard as she is now third with a total of 168 points.

Jaelin Kauf, a 19-year-old rookie from the United States who was competing in just her second World Cup event, also put in a notable performance as she led the field going into the super final before she faltered and finished outside of the medal positions.

The event in Deer Valley continues tomorrow with men’s and women’s aerials competitions.
