Paralympic and world champion Davies added an impressive 83 centimetres to South African Fanie Lombaard's 12-year-old record when he launched a throw of 48.69 metres.

"I'm very grateful to all the people that have voted and supported me," said Davies, who polled 51 per cent of the votes.

"They're indispensable.

"I have worked very hard with a great team around me in the winter.

Davies is due to compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games next month before taking part in the European Championships on home soil in Swansea in August.

"I know I can do 50 metres in the discus and would love to do it in Swansea and go over 15 metres in the shot-put," he said.

Before that, the 23-year-old has his sights set on the next IPC Athletics Grand Prix event due to place in Berlin from June 20 to22.

"Berlin is going to be another fantastic event that IPC Athletics are creating," said Davies.

"The Grand Prix is building a high standard of competition throughout the year.

"I'm hoping to continue my winning streak there."

IPC Athlete of the Month nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees and international federations.

Davies came on top of the public vote ahead of Belgian wheelchair racer Marieke Vervoort, who was also in world record breaking form last month when she registered a time of 14min 47.55sec in the women's T52 5,000m in Nottwil, Switzerland.

Canada's boccia player Marco Dispaltro, Japanese wheelchair tennis player Yui Kamije and Poland's wheelchair fencer Dariusz Pender were the other athletes shortlisted for the award.
