Tom Pidcock of Britain won the first XC race of the 2023 International Cycling Union (UCI) Mountain Bike World Cup season in Nové Město na Moravě.

The 23-year-old Tokyo 2020 Olympic cross-country champion was the first to cross the line despite suffering a crash due to wet conditions.

After winning the short-track event on Friday (May 12), Pidcock started the race on Sunday (May 14) with an early lead.

His main challenger was Frenchman Joshua Dubau.

During the fifth lap, Pidcock slipped on a downhill section, allowing Dubau to get in front.

But the three-time World Championships gold medallist remained calm to recover and overtake the French rider to in the final lap with a sensational attack to finish in 1hour 23.01min.

He previously won at Nové Město na Moravě in 2020 and 2021.

"Today was a hard race, honestly," he said after the race.

"Conditions were super tricky.

"It was tricky, I think my tyres were a bit hard.

"I was struggling a bit on the roots, but it's nice to win in the end."

Dubau crossed the line +0:05 later while bronze went to ten-time world champion Nino Schurter of Switzerland in +0:23.

Dutch sensation Puck Pieterse stunned France's Pauline Ferrand-Prevot to take the women's race.

The 21-year-old secured the gold medal by five seconds and had to battle the reigning world champion in the final lap to secure victory.

Another Frenchwoman, Loana Lecomte claimed the bronze medal.

Pieters crossed the line in 1:23:01 while European champion Lecomte timed 1:23:12.

Despite a puncture, Britain's Evie Richards battled from ninth sport finish fourth overall.

"I don't know what happened," Pieterse said.

"Normally my start is really good, but we were going so fast.

"I thought I totally blew myself up.

"It looked like the others did too.

"Then Pauline and I, we kept going in front of each other...

"After a few laps, Evie (Richards) had a flat tyre and suddenly I was racing in the front and didn't know what to do.

"I just tried to keep calm and it worked out!"
