The Hong Kong DanceSport Association has revealed that the country has been selected to host an breaking qualification event for next year's Olympics in Paris.

The national governing body has told the South China Morning Post that it will stage the final round of the World DanceSport Federation Breaking for Gold World Series at the end of this year.

The Olympic qualifier is set to form part of the Hong Kong Open, which is scheduled to run from December 15 to 24.

More than 400 athletes are expected to participate in the Breaking for Gold World Series competition at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

The World Formation Latin Championships and the Asian DanceSport Championships are also due to take place alongside the Paris 2024 qualifier.

George Yip Chi-wai, head of the Hong Kong DanceSport Association, said he was hoping to secure Government funding to help host the three competitions which he expects to cost around HKD5 million (£526,000/637,500/598,000) to stage.

"The Government’s initial feedback is that they are willing to include the Breaking for Gold and the Formation Latin Worlds as 'M Mark’ events [separately], but what we want to sell is the Hong Kong Open as a whole," said Yip told the South China Morning Post.

"We will host it annually, similar to the prestigious German Open in DanceSport."

Kitakyushu in Japan is due to stage the first leg of the Breaking for Gold World Series from February 24 to 25.

Other events are planned to be held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Porto in Portugal.

Hong Kong's breaking team have reportedly been training in Japanese capital Tokyo before the opening Breaking for Gold World Series event.

"This is the first time our team has gone overseas for training, and we are fortunate to have two world-leading breakers to be the team’s trainers," Lam Sang-yuen, chairman of the breaking division at the Hong Kong DanceSport Association, told the South China Morning Post.

Breaking is set to make its Olympic debut at Paris 2024 and the Breaking for Gold World Series presents the first stage of qualification.
