The Hong Kong DanceSport Association is looking to host two Olympic breaking qualifiers as part of a strategy to secure a spot for the region's athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Officials are aiming to stage a Breaking for Gold (BfG) World Series event at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium at the end of this year, and an Olympic qualifier series competition between March and June in 2024.

A World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) competition in December 2023 is also being planned, with organisers hoping to finalise the details this month.

"Our original plan was to host the BfG on December 9 and 10, but the stadium can only accommodate an event on the 15 and 16 or Christmas Eve weekend," a spokesperson from the governing body said, as reported by South China Morning Post.

"WDSF has already said no one will compete on Christmas, so we are now awaiting official confirmation of the competition dates from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department."

The two-day World Series event would count as one of the Paris 2024 ranking tours and would be expected to attract around 450 athletes and cost approximately HKD3 million (£318,000/$380,000/€360,000).

Breaking is set to make its Olympic debut at Paris 2024 and the World Series presents the first stage of qualification.

"We have already submitted our application, and we are hopeful that our bid will be successful in creating a favourable environment and a home advantage for Hong Kong breakers," said chairman of the Hong Kong DanceSport Association breaking division Lam Sang-yuen, who competes under the name B-Boy Fishball, as reported by South China Morning Post.

"We want to show the world that Hong Kong dancers are fearless and brave in the face of challenges."

The World Series is due to begin on February 24 in Kitakyushu in Japan, while the only other stop currently scheduled is in Porto.
