Poland and Uruguay lead the way after the first day of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey5s tournament in Lausanne, topping the men's and women's standings, respectively.

The Poles got off to a poor start as they fell to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Pakistan.

Muhammad Murtaza got Rehan Butt's side off to a flyer with a sublime field goal finish after just three minutes before Wojciech Rutkowski pegged them back.

However, an eight-minute hattrick from Abuzar put the game out of reach for Poland despite a late Robert Pawlak strike.

They got back on track a few hours later in their next match with a 5-0 demolition job of Malaysia and scraped through a thrilling encounter with Switzerland to win 3-2.

The results leave Poland in first place in the men's standings with six points, although Pakistan and India are on their tail with four points and a game in hand.

In the women's tournament, Uruguay picked up a 4-3 win against India following a thrilling fixture in the Swiss city.

Nicolás Tixe's team then backed it up with 4-0 whitewash of the hosts as Teresa Viana and Manuela Vilar both scored braces as they alternated the scoring.

The Uruguayans are level on points at the top of the table as both them and Switzerland have six but the former's superior goal difference of five to zero gives them sole control of pole position.

They have also played one game less than the hosts.

The event is set to conclude tomorrow with the remaining round robin fixtures before finals in both the men's and women's division.

The deciders will then be played by first and second place in the standings.
