The first senior World Hockey5s event has been scheduled to take place in Lausanne next June, it has been announced.

The event, originally due to be held in September, but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been re-arranged for June 4 and 5 at the Place de la Navigation in the Olympic capital, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) revealed.

"Intense competition, music entertainment and additional activities, such as initiations or demonstrations, are high on the programme of an event which will enable to showcase hockey and engage further with the public," the sport’s world governing body promised.

India and Pakistan will headline a men’s competition that is also set to include hosts Switzerland, along with Malaysia and Poland.

Teams from India, Switzerland and Poland will also take part in the women’s competition alongside South Africa and Uruguay.

Entry to the competition will be free and the event will be broadcast live on the Watch.Hockey platform.

The sport is FIH's version of Twenty20 cricket, 3x3 basketball or rugby sevens and has been used in the last two editions of the Summer Youth Olympic Games, including at Buenos Aires 2018 where it is claimed more than 200,000 spectators turned up to watch the event.

As the name suggests, Hockey5s is played with five players per team.

The ball is in play for about 90 per cent of a match, thanks to rebound-boards placed against the outside of the side-lines and back-lines and matches are played on smaller pitches.

There are usually more goals with Hockey5s than with the more traditional 11-a-side format of hockey, since players can score from anywhere after the attacking line.

The match duration is shorter, with two halves of 10 minutes each.

An inaugural edition of the FIH Hockey5s World Cup is due to take place in Oman in 2024 and Hockey5s World Tour is expected to be launched next year.

"Hockey5s is a great format to promote our sport and especially introduce it to sports fans not yet familiar with hockey," said FIH chief executive Thierry Weil.

"I invite everyone to come to this world event and enjoy the speed, skills and fun of our game."
