Venezuela’s Ruben Limardo Gascon and Italy’s Alberta Santuccio won the men’s and women’s competitions at the International Fencing Federation Budapest Grand Prix, held in the épée discipline.

Hungary’s David Nagy finished in second while third place in the men’s event was shared by Gabriele Cimini of Italy and Niko Vuorinen of Finland.

A busy day of action saw all rounds from the last 64 through to the final completed in both the men’s and women’s competitions at the BOK Hall.

Limardo Gascon triumphed 13-5 in the final against Nagy, after earlier wins against Cimini, fellow Italian Andrea Santarelli, Grigori Beskin of Israel, Lucas Malcotti of Switzerland and Mateusz Nycz of Poland.

Meanwhile, Nagy reached the showpiece match in the men’s event after defeating Vuorinen, Tamas Mate Koch of Hungary and two French fencers in Yannick Borel and Daniel Jerent.

In the women’s event victory went to Alberta Santuccio of Italy, with second going to Anna Kun of Hungary and third places to In-Jeong Choi of South Korea and top seed Katrina Lehis of Estonia.

Santuccio triumphed in the final 15-7 after earlier wins against Choi, Katherine Holmes of the United States and Polish fencers Martyna Swatowska-Wenglarczyk and Magdalena Pawlowska.

Meanwhile, Kun reached the showpiece match after defeating top seed Lehis 14-11, Kristina Kuusk of Estonia, Vivian Wai Man Kong of Hong Kong, Hyein Lee of South Korea and Maria De Los Angeles Jaramillo Quevedo of Colombia.
