The 2022 International Fencing Federation (FIE) WESTEND Grand Prix, organised by the Hungarian Fencing Federation, is scheduled to start tomorrow at BOK Hall, one of the largest sports facilities in Budapest.

The competition uses the épée weapon, and each National Federation is eligible to enter a maximum of 12 fencers while the organising country may enter up to 20 fencers.

Fencers from all over the world will be in the field, except those from Ukraine, China, Russia and Belarus, with fencers from the latter two countries banned from participating in FIE competitions until further notice due to Russia and Belarus' invasion of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Igor Reizlin, who is currently leading the world rankings with 181.000 points, will not be present but the men's épée Tokyo 2020 individual gold medallist Romain Cannone from France and Gergely Siklósi from the host country will be in the field.

In second place in the senior rankings is Cannone with 178.000 with Siklósi in third on 170.000.

Among the women, Sun Yiwen of China has secured her spot in the ranking with 203.000 points, but her classification might change after this tournament.

Estonia’s Katrina Lehis is in second with 185.000 followed by Choi Injeong of South Korea third on 153.000.

Lehis had a great performance at the Qatar Grand Prix beating her colleague Nelli Differt in the final.

The event manager is Veselko Dumitrov from Serbia who was the fencing coach of the Saudi Arabian national team.

All the participants need to provide a negative polymerase chain reaction test result upon arrival to Hungary, with competition expected to run until Sunday (March 5).
