The Kremlin Cup has been cancelled due to a growing number of coronavirus cases in Moscow, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) have announced.

The Ice Palace Krylatskoye was set to stage the ATP 250 event from October 19 to 25 before hosting the WTA Premier tournament from October 26 to November 1.

But a joint statement from the ATP and WTA revealed the cancellation, attributing it to a "recent increase in the COVID-19 infection rate".

"As mandated by the Moscow City Administration, the event will no longer be permitted to go ahead in 2020," the statement added.

ATP events in Antwerp and Cologne are still scheduled to take place that same week.

Over the past 24 hours, 5,905 new coronavirus cases and 134 deaths were registered in Russia.

But the decision to cancel the Kremlin Cup in light of the increase is not expected to impact on the staging of the ATP 500 St Petersburg Open, which is set to be held from October 10 to 18.

A further statement from the WTA added: "The WTA continues to monitor the situation closely and work with medical experts, as protecting the health and safety of our WTA community is of utmost importance.

"The tour continues to remain vigilant in managing this challenging situation and playing as much tennis as it is safe to do so."

Last year's Kremlin Cup tournaments were won by Russia's Andrey Rublev and Switzerland's Belinda Bencic.

The Italian Open, which is both an ATP and WTA event, is currently taking place in Rome ahead of the French Open, the final Grand Slam of the year.
