Sjef van den Berg achieved a European ranking round record on the opening day of the 2018 World Archery Indoor Championships.

The Dutchman was in fine form in the men's recurve qualification, as he missed just two targets at the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Complex.

It saw him finish with 598 points out of a possible 600, which bettered the previous European record set by Italy's Michele Frangilli, who shot 597 back in 2001.

"I knew that my national record was the same amount of points, so I knew it was there," said Van der Berg.

"On the last end, it's definitely in your brain.

"I knew that I was going to do something nice, and it would be good to make it a record.

"The trick for me was just to keep my rhythm; not to make it too complicated."

The Dutchman ended level at the top of the ranking round with Japan's Yuki Kawata, who also produced an impressive display.

Japan's Irie Yu and Sugimoto Tomomi led the women's recurve qualification, after the duo finished with 591 and 587 points.

They were followed by Russia's Sayana Tsyrempilova, who ended third ranked on 585.

Defending women's champion Lisa Unruh of Germany shot one end to ensure she would be able to continue participating in the event, despite suffering from illness which curtailed her qualifying.

Mexico's Linda Ochoa-Anderson, Denmark's Tanja Jensen and Sarah Prieels of Belgium all ended the women's compound qualification with a score of 594 points.

A coin toss will decide which archer earns the top ranking as a result.

The host nation dominated men's compound qualifying, with Kristofer Schaff leading the way with 598 points.

He was followed by team-mates Tate Morgan and Jesse Broadwater.

Competition will continue with match play tomorrow.
