Steve Wijler of the Netherlands defeated America's triple Olympic medallist Brady Ellison to claim the men’s recurve title at the Indoor Archery World Cup in Nimes.

The 21-year-old hit a perfect 30 in each of the final three sets of the match at Parc-Expos Hall to secure a 6-4 victory over Ellison of the United States, giving him his first-ever indoor title.

This was not the first time Wijler caused a shock in a major final having won the Archery World Cup event in Shanghai last year by beating Olympic team gold medallist Kim Woojin of South Korea.

Today’s men’s recurve bronze medal was taken by South Korea’s Kim Jae Hyeong.

The women’s recurve event between South Korean duo Kim Surin and Sim Yeji went down to the wire with a shootout required to separate the pair.

It was eventually Kim who came out on top with a 10-9 victory in the shootout, giving her a 6-5 win overall.

Germany’s Lisa Unruh, who won a silver medal at Rio 2016, claimed the bronze medal.

As was the case in the men's recurve, the men’s compound was also a match between a Dutchman and an American as Mike Schloesser of The Netherlands took on Kristofer Schaff of the US.

This time it was the US athlete who came out on top with Schaff recording a 147-145 victory over 2013 World Championship gold medallist Schloesser.

An American athlete also took bronze with Paul Tedford defeating Turkey’s Demir Elmaagacli by a 149-147 scoreline.

There was more disappointment for Turkey as Yesim Bostan was beaten 143-141 by Russia's Natalia Avdeeva, a three-time World Cup champion and a silver medallist at this event last year, in the women’s compound.

The bronze medal was decided by a shootout after Denmark’s Sarah Sonnichsen and Spain’s Andrea Marcos played out a 144-144 draw.

Eventually, it was Marcos who claimed the final place on the podium.

The next stage of the indoor Archery World Cup is due to take place in Las Vegas between February 9 and 11.
