President of the European Handball Federation (EHF), Michael Wiederer, has expressed his concerns regarding the scheduling of the Handball Bundesliga.

The 68-year-old, who was re-elected in 2021 as the President, has questioned the league's commitment to promoting international success for its clubs, particularly considering the demanding schedule they face. Wiederer alluded to the fact that other teams and leagues would prevent their stars from burning out.

As with many schedules, not just in handball but around all sports, fixtures come thick and fast, with fewer preparation times between fixtures and matches. Teams could face a crunch clash on the European stage on Tuesday or Wednesday and then have to battle it out in a top-of-the-table encounter on Saturday, for instance.

Though it has even gotten to the stage where teams may just have a day off before battling it out once again, especially in handball, Wiederer's criticism surrounds matches including Fuchse Berlin and THW Kiel at the end of April.

Following the encounter with Kiel, the capital club outfit had only a single day's respite before facing off against the French club Nantes. Kiel, on the other hand, then faced off the following Wednesday in the Champions League in Montpellier. Thankfully for both clubs, they advanced to the next round despite the scheduling challenges in their respective competitions and congested fixtures.

Berlin has secured a spot in the final round of the EHF Cup, which will take place on 25 and 26 May in Hamburg. They will be joined by Rhein-Neckar Lowen, SG Flensburg-Handewitt, and Romanian champions Dinamo Bucharest.

As for Kiel, they advanced to the Final Four of the Champions League, alongside SC Magdeburg, FC Barcelona, and Aalborg HB from Denmark. The tournament is scheduled to be held on 8 and 9 June in Cologne.
