The German Skating Union (DEU) announced on Tuesday that it will host the World Figure Skating Championships in 2027 or 2028. The 2024 edition in Montreal just ended a few days ago and will be followed by Boston in 2025 and Prague in 2026. 

The Westfalenhalle in Dortmund has been designated as the venue, a role it played in 1964, 1980 and 2004 - the last time Germany hosted the event - after the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo. 

DEU President Andreas Wagner said: "It would be an important signal to bring an international figure skating event back to Germany after so many years, in order to attract new fans and motivated young talents to the sport."

Germany could host the 14th World Figure Skating Championships in its history and for Dortmund it would be the 4th event and the second in the 21st century. The German city with the most Figure Skating World Championships hosts is Berlin with six, Munich three times and Garmisch-Partenkirchen once.

German figure skaters have won a total of 34 gold medals. Pairs is the most decorated discipline with 19 triumphs, followed by women's pairs with 10 and men's pairs with five. Germany has yet to win a gold medal in any of the four disciplines that make up the event, and that's ice dance. 

The pair of Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin had secured a medal - bronze - for Germany at Montreal 2024, something that hasn't happened since 2018. At the last three World Figure Skating Championships in Dortmund, the German team won four gold, two silver and two bronze medals. 

A decision on whether Germany will host the 2027 or 2028 World Figure Skating Championships is expected later this year. Germany will then know whether it will be hosting the event for the first time in 23 or 24 years.
