The 37-year-old American, who has returned to the event after having two sons, finished clear of Japan's newly established Asian Games champion Yuko Takahashi, who earned silver ahead of Tereza Zimovianova of the Czech Republic.

The men's race in this South Korean resort saw a second consecutive win for Germany's Tim Hellwig, with silver going to Portugal’s Ricardo Batista and Sam Dickinson of Britain claiming bronze.

Takahashi led the women’s field out of the swimming discipline, with the veteran American emerging 25 seconds later.

But by the second lap of the bike ride, Jorgensen was among the chasing group who closed up to the leaders.

But trouble in the second transition meant the American set out on the run with ground to make up.

Once again, however, she made up ground to draw level and then pushed on to win in 58min 16sec.

"I had a few mistakes today so I’m not really thrilled with the process," Jorgensen said.

"I had a horrible swim and in the final transition my hands were so cold I couldn’t get my shoes on.

"But I’m always happy to come home with a win."

Hellwig, a winner in Chengdu last weekend, took control of the bike ride on the first lap.

A final sprint took him clear of Batista for another place atop the podium.

"It’s been an amazing 2023, and to finish it off with another gold sums up an almost perfect year for me," Hellvig said.
