Mexico’s Jessica Garcia Quijano ended her wait for a major title as she claimed victory on home soil at the World Para Taekwondo Championships in Veracruz.

Garcia Quijano’s victory provided a great start to the Para kyorugi discipline at the World Trade Centre.

Cheered on by a vocal home crowd, Garcia Quijano won 3-1 against Egypt’s Salma Ali Abd Al Moneem Hassan, who won a first gold for her nation at the World Para Taekwondo Grand Prix, a warm-up event held at the same location on the eve of the World Championships.

Speaking after her win Garcia Quijano said: "Today all my years of hard work finally paid off. I couldn’t be happier than this.

"This is my biggest medal ever and winning it in Mexico with all my loved ones and fans cheering for me made it even more special."

In the K44 women’s under-47 kilograms final, Tokyo 2020 Paralympics champion Leonor Angelica Espinoza Carranza of Peru was beaten by Uzbekistan’s second ranked Ziyodakhon Isakova.

Both fighters displayed strong defensive techniques during the fight, with Isakova winning on superiority after it had finished 0-0 at the end of regulation time.

In the men’s event, Asaf Yasur of Israel retained his World Championship title after overcoming Xiang Wen Xiao of Chinese Taipei 13-8.

Earlier Wen Xiao had caused an upset at the semi-final stage of the K44 under-58kg category, beating world number one Ali Can Ozcan of Turkey 31-18.

In the K41 under-58kg an all-Georgian final went the way of George Hizanishvili, who overcame compatriot Goga Khakhalashvili 31-24.
