The United States' Caroline Marks has been crowned women's champion on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour in San Clemente, sealing a place at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Defending champion Carissa Moore, who represents Hawaii on the WSL, was already assured of one of America's maximum-permitted two places in women's surfing at next year's Olympics, with the other between Marks and Caitlin Simmers.

Marks won the second match of the WSL Finals at the Californian resort of Lower Trestles by 11.67 points to 10.36 against Simmers to beat her compatriot to the Paris 2024 berth.

She added the WSL title to that by beating Australia's Tyler Wright 17.40 to 13.70 then Moore in a best-of-three rounds title match.

Marks took the first round 17.10 to 14.97 and the second 14.60 to 13.53.

Moore had been number-one ranked going into the Finals, for which the winner-takes-all format used since 2021 has proved controversial.

Wright and Molly Picklum from Australia, Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb, Costa Rica's Brisa Hennessy, France's Johanne Defay and Teresa Bonvalot of Portugal also earned surfing places at Paris 2024 through their WSL performances.

On the men's side at Lower Trestles, Brazil's Filipe Toledo defended his WSL title, beating Ethan Ewing of Australia in the final.

Toledo scored 17.97 and 14.27 in the two rounds to the 17.23 and 12.37 from Ewing.

Both were among the 10 male athletes qualified for Paris 2024 through the WSL, with others including Toldeo's compatriot João Chianca and Ewing's compatriot Jack Robinson.

Surfing debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and is part of the programme again for Paris 2024, when events are set to be held at Teahupo'o reef pass in Tahiti, and Los Angeles 2028.
