There was a surprise winner in the men’s keirin as Colombian Kevin Santiago Quintero Chavarro took gold on the final night of track action at the Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chavarro, who competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and won bronze in the keirin at last year’s World Championships, upgraded to gold on this occasion, winning the race at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in a time of 9.889 seconds.

Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands, who had won the last three World Championship golds in this discipline, could only finish fourth in the final.

He was kept off the podium by Australia’s Matthew Richardson, who took silver, and Shinji Nakano of Japan who claimed bronze.

There was home success in the women’s sprint as Britain’s Emma Finucane won her first individual World Championship gold medal by defeating Lea Friedrich of Germany in straight rides.

Bronze went to Ellesse Andrews of New Zealand, who defeated Germany’s Emma Hinze.

New Zealand’s Aaron Gate took the men’s points race crown as he won three sprints on his way to a winning total of 123.

Albert Torres Barcelo of Spain took silver with 107, with the podium completed by Fabio van den Bossche of Belgium on 95.

American Jennifer Valente successfully defended her women’s omnium title, taking victory with 145 points, with her best performance coming in winning the second event the tempo race.

Denmark’s Amalie Dideriksen took the silver medal with 136 points, while bronze went to Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky on 133, including victory in the elimination race.

Elsewhere at the Championships, Switzerland took victory in the mountain bike cross-country mixed team relay discipline.

The race saw under-23, junior and elite riders coming together to compete with the winning Swiss line-up of Dario Lilla, Nicolas Halter, Linda Indergand, Ronja Blochlinger, Anina Hutter and Nino Schurter take victory in 1hour 5min 42sec.

France took the silver medal nine seconds behind, with Denmark completing the podium at 41 seconds behind the winners.

In the mixed team final in the trials discipline, Spain took gold with 810 points, followed by France winning silver with 680 and Britain taking the bronze on 600.

The first Para road cycling finals also took place today, with medals handed out in the time-trial disciplines across 14 categories for men and women.

Medals are due to be handed out tomorrow in BMX freestyle flatland, mountain bike cross-country, Para road cycling and road cycling disciplines.
