Organisers of the Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships has revealed that focus was "uniqueness and originality" as they unveiled the medals today.  

A logo of the World Championships and the Statue of Liberty atop Gellért Hill, a popular landmark in the host nation, can be seen on the front side of the medals.

Organisers claim that special attention was given to make sure Budapest was well-represented on the medals.

The Statue of Liberty is 14 metres tall, with the female figure holding a pam branch, symbolising the glory, victory, and enlightenment from ancient times.

Inculcating this as part of the design was to pay tribute to former athletes and their achievements, according to organisers. 

The back side of the medal shows the National Athletics Centre, the venue for the World Championships, and race track.

"It was imperative that our medals connect sports, heroism and national identity," Local Organising Committee chief executive Balázs Németh said.


"Moreover, for the first time in the history of the World Athletics Championships, all three coaches of the podium finishers will also receive medals."

It was made using brass allow with gold, silver, or bronze plated on each medal.

More than 3,000 hours of work was put on to deliver the final product, with 140 kilograms of metal and 450 metres of ribbon used.

Leftover materials from the racetrack at the National Athletics Centre was used for lining box of the medals, with sustainability a key part of the process.

A Medal Plaza has been made where athletes will receive their medals.

The World Championships is scheduled to be held from August 19 to 27.
