The World Triathlon Championship Series stop in Sunderland proved a stunning success for France, who enjoyed one-two finishes in both individual events then won the mixed relay.

Elite events were held under the sprint format at the Roker Beach course in the English city, and Cassandre Beaugrand made it back-to-back Series wins in the women's event while last year's long-distance world champion Pierre Le Corre earned his maiden victory in the men's.

A strong 750-metre swim and swift transition ensured Beaugrand was well-placed at the start of the five-lap 21.3 kilometres bike leg.

Beaugrand formed part of a group of seven who led for the majority of the bike, but they were caught to create a large group of 28 in transition to the two-lap 5km run.

She found herself out in front with compatriot Emma Lombardi, who she dropped on the final lap to follow up her victory in the German city of Hamburg earlier this month with another win in 59min 53sec.

Lombardi took second place in 1 hour 0min 11sec. with Germany's Annika Koch completing the podium six seconds further back.

Beth Potter of Britain opted to sit out her home individual event, but remains the Championship Series leader with 2,986.57 points going into the Finals in Pontevedra in Spain, scheduled from September 22 to 24.

Beaugrand is now her closest challenger on 2,924.34, with the United States' Taylor Spivey - another absentee from the Sunderland individual start - third on 2,836.90.

The men's race finished with a sprint between Le Corre and his compatriot Léo Bergère, the reigning world champion.

Le Corre edged out his compatriot to take a first Championship Series victory in 54:06, with overall leader Hayden Wilde of New Zealand, the individual Olympic bronze medallist, completing the podium in 54:21 after the trio had raced together for much of the final lap of the run.

Wilde continues to lead the Championship rankings with 3,441.72 points, followed by Portugal's Vasco Vilaça who was fourth in Sunderland with 2,952.83 and Bergère with 2,789.36.

Each leg of the mixed relay consisted of a 300m swim, 7.7km bike and 1.7km run.

Tom Richard was first for France and among a leading group of 15 as he passed over to Lombardi.

Former individual Olympic champion Gwen Jorgensen, who has returned to triathlon targeting the Paris 2024 mixed relay, hauled the US back into contention on the second leg, with Lombardi keeping France among the frontrunners.

A big effort from Wilde had New Zealand in front going into the final leg, but it remained wide open with Le Corre also in the mix for France.

Beaugrand had a 10-second penalty to serve for France, but a hugely impressive leg of 23:07 enabled her team to claim a comfortable victory in 1:26:53.

Jessica Fullager, a late replacement for Olivia Mathias, took the anchor leg for hosts Britain to help them finish second in 1:27:16, with European Games champion Solveig Løvseth taking Norway to third in 1:27:27.

The next major event on the World Triathlon calendar is a Paris 2024 test event, scheduled in Paris from August 17 to 20, on the courses set to be used at next year's Olympics and Paralympics.
